Nutrition
The Shar Pei's diet should be high-quality and adapted to its age, activity level, and potential sensitivities. Due to their predisposition to skin allergies and digestive issues, many Shar Peis benefit from a limited ingredient or hypoallergenic diet, often formulated with a single source of protein and carbohydrates. Premium dry food, rich in quality protein and with an appropriate balance of fats and nutrients, is generally the best option. Raw food (BARF) or home-cooked meals can be viable under the supervision of a veterinary nutritionist, but require a very precise balance to avoid deficiencies. It is important to control portions to prevent overweight, as excess weight can worsen joint problems and make cleaning skin folds difficult. Constant access to fresh, clean water is essential. If the dog shows signs of allergy (itching, skin redness, digestive problems), consulting with the veterinarian to adjust the diet is crucial.
