Emergency recall
The cue that can save your dog's life. Once a month. Never more.

The emergency recall is a word or whistle reserved for critical situations. Never wears out because it's only used in real risk. Its effectiveness depends on one principle: it never fails to reward spectacularly.
What you get
- Stops your dog in front of a car
- Pulls him out of an imminent fight
- Pulls him away from poisoned food
It's the only exercise you train hoping you'll never need it.
Before you start
- · Solid basic recall
- · Name recognition
Materials
- · A specific whistle (Acme 211.5 is the standard)
- · Highest-value treats: roast chicken, ham, sausage
Step by step
- 1
Pick the exclusive sound or word
A whistle with a very specific pattern (e.g. three short blasts) or a word you have NEVER used: "now!", "red!". This becomes sacred.
- 2
Charge the sound at home
Without asking anything, blow the whistle and the best treat in the world appears. 5 times a day for 3 days. Sound = automatic jackpot.
- 3
Call from short distances
In garden or home, blow the whistle when he's calm. If he comes: exaggerated jackpot, 30-second party, the entire treat bag.
- 4
Increase distraction in controlled way
Another family member plays with him. You blow the whistle. If he comes: max party. If not, don't insist, don't record a failure: practice next day without distraction.
- 5
Move to park with long line
10m long line. When he's sniffing something interesting, whistle. If he responds: huge party with ham. If not, guide with the line and reward when he arrives anyway.
- 6
Save the sound for real use
Once consolidated, do NOT use the whistle in daily play. Use it 1-2 times a month in real situations or simulations. Every use MUST end with jackpot. Wear it out and you lose it.
Common mistakes
- Using the whistle for end of walk (wears it out)
- Rewarding with petting instead of spectacular food
- Testing with max distractions too soon
If something isn't working
Works at home, not outdoors
→ You raised distractions too fast. Back to the garden for 1 week before retrying the park.
Pro tips
- Once a month, fake an emergency: whistle + ham. Reminder for him, test for you.
- A whistle always sounds the same; your voice changes with your mood. The whistle is more reliable.
Deep dive
Emergency recall is the most important skill in advanced training. It works because it's built on an unbreakable association between a unique sound and the highest possible reward, reserved exclusively for critical moments. It's the difference between a dog that can be off-leash in safe areas and one that must always be on lead.
